Kelowna liegt ungefähr in der Mitte des sehr lang gezogenen riesigen Okanagan. Eine Brücke führt von West-Kelowna über den an dieser Stelle sehr schmalen See in den Nordost-Teil der Stadt. Wir überlegen wie wir den Tag am sinnvollsten verbingen. Im Reiseführer wird der Bear Creek Park angepriesen. Hier soll es schöne Wanderwege mit Blick auf den See und einen kleinen Strandbereich geben. Vielleicht kann man da Kanuboot fahren … denn bis heute haben wir es ja leider immer noch nicht zu einer Kanutour gebarcht! 😉
Leider ist der Bear Creek Park eher eine etwas ernüchternde Erfahrung. In den letzen Jahren gab es hier in der Region immer wieder größere Waldbrände (das erzählt uns die nette Dame bei der Weinprobe, siehe weiter unten) alles sieht ziemlich chaotisch aus, überall liegen Baumstümpfe, vertrocknetes Geäst herum, kahle abgebrannte Baumgerippe stehen mitten in der Landschaft. Wir wandern ein ziemliches Stück bergauf entlang des Bear Creek Canyons. Drehen dann aber irgendwann um und machen uns wieder an den Abstieg zum See. Von Strand und Kanus ist leider nichts zu sehen.
Das Okanagan-Tal ist ein berühmtes Weinanbaugebiet in Kanada, überall entlang der Straße in den südlicheren Bereich des Sees trifft man auf Wineries. Wir besuchen die Sumac Ridge Estate Winery in Summerland. Und sind geplättet von der Qualität des Weines, der professionellen Präsentation und der schönen Weinberge rund um die Winery. Der Winzer war laut Aussage der sehr netten Beraterin einer der ersten in der Region. Natürlich testen wir einige Weine – es gibt leckeren Sauvignon Blanc, Rose-Weine und auch ein paar kräftige Rotweine, einen Shiraz und einen Barrique – und nehmen ein paar Fläschchen mit.

Wine and water
Kelowna lies approximately in the middle of the very long giant Okanagan. A bridge leads from West-Kelowna over the very narrow lake into the north-eastern part of the city. We think about how to spend the day in the most meaningful way. In the travel guide the Bear Creek Park is advertised. Here there should be beautiful hiking trails with a view of the lake and a small beach area. Maybe you can go canoeing there … because until today we still haven’t had a canoe trip! 😉
Unfortunately the Bear Creek Park is rather a sobering experience. In the last few years there have been forest fires here in the region (the nice lady at the wine tasting tells us this, see below), everything looks pretty chaotic, everywhere are tree stumps, dried branches lying around, bare burnt tree skeletons standing in the middle of the landscape. We walk quite a bit along the Bear Creek Canyon. But then we turn around and start the descent to the lake again. Unfortunately there is nothing to see from the beach and the canoes.
The Okanagan valley is a famous wine-growing area in Canada, everywhere along the road to the southern part of the lake you can find wineries. We visit the Sumac Ridge Estate Winery. And are flattened by the quality of the wine, the professional presentation and the beautiful vineyards around the Winery. The winemaker was one of the first in the region, according to the very nice consultant. Of course we test some wines – there are delicious Sauvignon Blanc, Rose wines and also some strong red wines, a Shiraz and a Barrique – and take some bottles with us.
