Am Tongariro kann man eigentlich nur eins machen – wandern. Also planen wir für den letzten Tag des Jahres eine ausgedehnte Wanderung entlang der Vulkanberge. Ich bin eigentlich keine begeisterte Wandererin. Mit wird schnell langweilig beim Wandern und körperliche Daueranstrengung kann ich auch nicht leiden.
At Tongariro you can only do one thing – hiking. So we are planning an extensive hike along the volcanic mountains for the last day of the year. I’m not really an enthusiastic hiker. I sometimes get bored with walking and I Don’t like physical exertion that much.

Weiter geht es Richtung Norden ins Landesinnere zum ältesten Nationalpark Neuseelands. Im Tongariro National Park, ziemlich im Zentrum der Nordinsel, befinden sich 3 aktive Vulkanberge, der Tongariro, der Ngauruhoe und der Ruapehu. Das müssen wir uns natürlich genauer ansehen.
Continue northwards to New Zealand’s oldest national park. In Tongariro National Park, in the centre of the North Island, there are 3 active volcanic mountains, Tongariro, Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu. We need to take a closer look, of course.

Den heutigen Tag verbringen wir gemütlich in Wellington. Die wichtigstens Highlights der Stadt sind alle fußläufig von unserem Hotel aus zu erreichen. Da gibt es die Einkaufsstraßen Lambton Quay und Willis Street, das Te Papa Museum, die Cable Car zum Aussichtspunkt mit Blick über die Stadt, das neuseeländische Parlament…
Today we spend the day in Wellington. The most important highlights of the city are all within walking distance of our hotel. There are the shopping streets of Lambton Quay and Willis Street, the Te Papa Museum, the Cable Car to the viewpoint overlooking the city, the New Zealand Parliament…

Heute setzen wir über zur Nordinsel, das heißt wir müssen pünktlich um 12:30 Uhr an der Fähre “Interislander“ in Picton sein. Laut Sharon müssen wir für die 160 km mit ca. 2 1/2 Stunden Fahrt rechnen. Es bleibt also leider keine Zeit, die Gegend oder Nelson genauer zu inspizieren.
Die gesamte Region ist Weinanabaugebiet, große Flächen mit Reben, alles ganz profimäßig … hier wird, soweit wir wissen hauptächlich Pinot Noir erzeugt.
Wir fahren um 10:00 Uhr ab und kommen punktgenau um 12:30 Uhr an der Fähre Interislander an. Puh! Das war knapp. Aber die Strecke führte wieder durch schwarzwaldähnliches Bergland, rauf und runter, Kurven ohne Ende, eine anstrengende Fahrt.
Today we set off for the north island, which means that we have to be on time at 12:30 o‘ clock at the ferry called Interislander in Picton. According to Sharon we have to expect about 2 1/2 hours of driving for the 160 km. Unfortunately, there is no time to take a closer look at the area or Nelson.
The whole region is a wine-growing area, large areas with vines, all very professional…. is produced here, as far as we know, mainly Pinot Noir.
We leave at 10:00 a. m. and arrive at the ferry Interislander at exactly 12:30 a. m.. Whew! That was close. But the route led again through black forest like mountainous terrain, up and down, bends without end, a strenuous ride.

Heute geht es auf lange Fahrt weiter in Rochtung Norden ca. 350 km die Küste entlang. Unterwegs möchten wir die Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki sehen und noch ein bisschen wandern. Die Fahrt entlang der Küste ist natürlich wunderschön, Sonnenschein und blauer Himmel bei ca. 20 °C nicht heiß, super angenehmes Reisewetter.
Today we continue our journey to the north. A long way is planned about 350 km along the coast. We want to see the Pancake Rocks in Punakaiki and hike a bit. The drive along the coast is of course beautiful, sunshine and blue sky at about 20 °C not hot, super pleasant weather for traveling.
